Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE â The Sounds spotted Albuquerque four runs in the first inning and spent the rest of the game vainly trying to mount a comeback before falling 7-5 to the Isotopes in game two of the PCL American Conference Finals in front of 10,004 fans at Greer Stadium.
The Isotopes' offensive attack started with the first batter of the game. Matt Erickson doubled to right field. After being sacrificed to third, he scored on a Derek Wathan single to right. Former Sound Jason Wood followed with a single before Chris Donnels smoked a Pat Mahomes offering to left-center for a two-run double. Donnels later scored on a Chad Allen single, the fourth straight hit of the frame.
Albuquerque's lead extended to five in the third when the Nashville defense failed Mahomes. Wood reached on a two-base throwing error by shortstop Aaron Holbert. Donnels followed by reaching on a throwing error by third baseman Dave Doster, with Wood scoring on the play.
Nashville finally broke through against Isotopes starter Sean Bergman in the last of the fourth when Tony Alvarez hit a solo home run, his first of the postseason. Albuquerque upped the lead back to five at 6-1 in the top of the fifth when Wood walked, stole second, and was driven home on a single by Allen.
The Sounds again cut into the lead in the home half of the fifth. Bobby Hill started the inning with a double to right-center, and Holbert followed by reaching on an infield single. Blake Barthol delivered with his first hit of the series, a double to deep right-center. Holbert and Hill had to wait to see if the ball would be caught so they were bunched up as they rounded third base. The result was Hill and Holbert sliding into home right on top of each other, just ahead of the relay throw to make the score 6-3. Barthol was cut down trying to advance to third on the play, halting the threat. The Isotopes stretched the lead back to four in the sixth when Hooper singled, stole second, and scored on a Wathan double.
Nashville's final comeback attempt came in the bottom of the eighth. With two away, J.J. Davis was hit by a Bergman pitch. Adam Hyzdu â who went 3-for-4 on the evening â followed by hitting a blast over the neck of the guitar scoreboard, cutting the lead to 7-5, but John Barnes grounded out and Blaine Neal threw a perfect ninth for the save.
Mahomes (0-1) took the loss after surrendering all seven Isotopes runs in his six innings of work. Bergman (1-0) earned the win, allowing five runs while striking out four in his eight innings of work.
The teams move on to the Land of Enchantment for the remainder of the best-of-five series, playing the balance of the necessary contests at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque. In Friday's game three, southpaw Dave Williams (7-4, 4.19 in the regular season) takes the ball for the Sounds in the 8:11 p.m. CDT start. Righty Jason Grilli (6-2, 3.38 in the regular season) will start for the Isotopes.
