Edmonton Trappers News Release
Right-hander Justin Duchscherer (1-0) tossed 6.0 shutout innings, allowing only one hit and one walk while fanning four as the Sacramento River Cats downed the Edmonton Trappers 16-2 Wednesday night at TELUS Field. The 14-run loss is the largest margin of defeat in Trapper playoff history. The previous largest margin occurred on September 7, 1990 when the Tacoma Rainiers, who were then affiliated with the Oakland A's, downed the Trappers 10-1. Several Sacramento players had big games, including shortstop Jose Flores, who went 5-for-5 with a run scored and four RBI and designated hitter Jason Grabowski, who was 3-for-6 with three runs scored, a double, a home run and five RBI. The River Cats have now won five consecutive games from the Trappers. Sacramento won the season series 11 games to five. Edmonton and Sacramento will continue this best-of-five series on Thursday night at TELUS Field. The series will conclude in California over the weekend.
Sacramento got things going in the first inning with two runs off Edmonton starter Seung Song (0-1). With one out in the inning Chris Prieto tripled to straightaway center field. Mike Edwards drew a walk and Graham Koonce, the 2003 PCL MVP, followed with a sacrifice fly that plated Prieto from third. Trapper center fielder Peter Bergeron dropped a long fly ball by Grabowski that scored Edwards with the second run of the frame. The River Cats added another run in the second inning as Mark Johnson singled with one out and scored when Esteban German bounced into a fielder's choice. They rallied for one more run off Song, chasing the right-hander, in the fourth inning. Michael Lockwood drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on a single by Johnson. He scored when Flores singled into left field. Song left after that base hit, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits and two walks, while striking out one.
The River Cats plated five runs in the fifth inning off reliever Blake Stein. Edwards drew a walk to open the inning, advanced to second on a ground out by Koonce and then scored on a single by Grabowski. Luis Lopez and Lockwood each singled to load the bases for Flores, who scored Grabowski and Lopez with a base hit up the middle. Flores and Lockwood scored on an error by third baseman Scott Hodges. They scored three more times in the sixth inning as Edwards again led off with a walk. Grabowski doubled, scoring the left fielder from first and Lopez followed with a single to put runners at first and third. Lockwood drew a walk from reliever Anthony Ferrari that loaded the bases for Johnson, who singled to center, scoring Grabowski. Flores' fourth single of the game plated Lopez with the final run of the inning. Edwards tripled with one out in the seventh and Koonce drew a walk to put runners on the corners for Grabowski, who homered to right field. The River Cats tacked on a final run in the ninth inning as Lockwood doubled off reliever Chuck Crumpton and scored on a single by German. Edmonton finally got on the board in the bottom of the ninth. Peter Bergeron reached on an infield single and moved to second on a base hit by Luis Figueroa. Terrmel Sledge then snuck a single through into right field scoring Bergeron and Valentino Pascucci plated Figueroa with a sacrifice fly.
