Sounders vs Timbers Tonight, Winner Hosts Chivas USA
June 26, 2007 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Seattle Sounders News Release
The Seattle Sounders face the Portland Timbers in the Second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on June 26, 7 PM at Starfire Sports Entertainment Complex.
The match promises to be a thrilling chapter in the I-5 rivalry that dates back to the North American Soccer League of the late seventies, with the winner going on to host a third round match against CD Chivas USA from Major League Soccer (MLS) and the loser exiting the tournament.
Seattle has gotten the better of Portland so far on the season, recording a win and a draw in the two regular season matches all ready played. The home opener at Qwest Field was the best attended match in the first half of the season with over 8,000 fans, including nearly 200 members of the Timbers Army supporters group, on-hand to watch the Sounders earn their first victory of the season.
The 2,000 seat Starfire Stadium has a history of hosting big matches between the Sounders and Timbers. In 2005 Seattle ended the Timbers season at the Starfire complex with a 2-0 playoff victory over their arch-rivals on their way to the USL First Division Title.
Earlier that year, the Timbers had eliminated the Sounders from the U.S. Open Cup in the third round with a 1-0 victory at PGE Park in Portland.
Further fanning the flames of the rivalry were the off season transfers of Portland's all time assist leader, Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar to the Sounders and Seattle's second all-time leading goal scorer, Andrew Gregor to Portland.
The U.S. Open Cup is the second longest running single elimination tournament in the World next to the English FA Cup. The Cup is open to all U.S. Soccer affiliated teams and the winner qualifies for the Cup winners cup where they face competition against the winners of similar tournaments from around the World.
Tickets to the match are $13 in advance through SeattleSounders.net or $15 at the gate on the day of the event. Parking at the Starfire Sports Complex is $8 the night of the match.
