Sounders FC lose to Portland Timbers

TUKWILA, Wash. - Seattle Sounders FC fell to the Portland Timbers, 2-0, in the opening match of the inaugural Cascadia Summit at Starfire Sports Complex on Friday night.

Jorge Perlaza scored the game's first goal in the 21st minute and Kenny Cooper added a second tally in the final minute of second-half stoppage time.

Kasey Keller dived to save Cooper's shot but Perlaza was at the back post to tap the rebound into an open net. Cooper found the side netting in the 93rd minute when he caught the Seattle defense on a counter-attack.

Seattle held the advantage in shots 18-7 (4-4 on goal) and on corner kicks, 7-2. Portland was whistled for 11 fouls and Seattle had six.

In the first half Blaise Nkufo got free on a breakaway in the 11th minute but his shot from 18 yards was deflected by a Portland defender and Fredy Montero's header on the rebound missed wide of the frame.

Alvaro Fernandez had a pair close misses in the game. He got free in the middle of the box in the 33rd minute and flicked a header that missed wide of the far post. In the 55th minute, Steve Zakuani sent a low cross into the box that fell to Fernandez in front of goal but his close-range shot missed high.

Osvaldo Alonso ran onto a bouncing ball and blasted a shot from 25 yards out in the 52nd minute that skimmed over the crossbar and landed in the top netting.

Alonso was cautioned in the 5th minute and Jhon Kennedy Hurtado was shown a yellow card in the 54th minute.

The Cascadia Summit continues on Saturday with the Supporters Summit and Coaches Forum at 12 p.m. followed by the Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps game at 4 p.m. The Sounders FC Academy U18 team plays the Whitecaps FC Residency team on Sunday at 12 p.m. and the weekend concludes on Sunday at 3 p.m. when Sounders FC takes on the Whitecaps FC. All events will be held at Starfire Stadium.
