SAN LUIS OBISPO, California - The San Jose Earthquakes defeated the defending MLS Cup Champion Colorado Rapids 1-0 on a Chris Wondolowski penalty in the MLS Central Coast Challenge at Cal Poly's Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

Ellis McLoughlin fed a through ball into the area to Ryan Johnsonin the 30th minute to create the penalty after Marvell Wynne took the lanky striker to ground. Wondolowski finished the ensuing shot low and to the right for his fourth goal in as many matches during the preseason.

Colorado finished the match with 13 shots, but only forced Quakes goalkeeper Jon Busch into five saves, including four in the second half to preserve the shutout.

The Earthquakes improved their record to 4-1-0 all time at Spanos Stadium, dating back to 2008. During the preseason, San Jose is 5-2-1 with four shutouts.

Opening Day for the Quakes is March 19 against Real Salt Lake at Buck Shaw Stadium. Kickoff for that match is 7 p.m. Tickets are available at SJEarthquakes.com or by calling 1-800-225-2277. For groups 10 or more, call 408-556-7700.
