Strong Island Sound News Release
Selden, NY: The Strong Island Sound defeated the Brooklyn Comets 115-101 last night to close out their 2006-2007 regular season. Originally scheduled to play the Newark Express on Sunday and Tuesday, the Express decided to end their season early thus ending the Sound's season. With the victory the Sound improved to 20-12 on the season, four more victories than last year's team which went to the ABA Final Four. Leading the way for Head Coach Dytanya Mixson's squad last night was ABA All-Star Greg Plummer (6'4''-G-83, college: Eckerd) with team highs of 28 points and eight assists. Not knowing that their season would end last night, the game had an unusually important feel to it and Brooklyn made sure that they pushed Strong Island to their limits in the playoff like atmosphere.
The Comets came out like gang busters in the first quarter, constantly pushing the pace and looking for quick open shots. Donald Harrison (6'9''-C-75, college: John Brown), who played with the Sound last season, connected on three three-pointers (including a 3D basket) to help the Comets establish a 33-29 lead after one quarter. After heading into the locker room down 53-47, the Sound came out in the second half and established their dominance by matching the Comets intensity and working inside out to get easy shots. Tommie Eddie (6'7''-F-82, college: Mississippi) saved one of his best performances of the season for last night as he contributed 26 points and seven rebounds on 8-18 shooting. The versatile big man from Ole Miss found his groove early on and helped seal the victory in the fourth with 14 points. In addition, Aaron Williams (6'2''-G-82, college: Delaware St.) had a strong game for the Sound. With an exquisite shooting night, Williams shot 6-9 from three including five of his first six from behind the arc and ended the game with 23 points and a game high four steals. Donald Hennie (5'10''-G-83, college: Seton Hill) led the Comets with 18 points on the night.
The Sound will now prepare for their first round home game this Friday, March 16th against an opponent yet to be determined.
