Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI - The Soo Eagles and Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings played their last game of the season against each other on Sunday afternoon, and it was a tale of three different periods. Soo dominated the first, jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead. The second period was evenly matched, while the third period saw Kalamazoo get the majority of the scoring chances. However, stellar goaltending by Tyler Marble and two late empty net goals propelled Soo to the 4-1 win. This was Soo's second regulation win in two days against Kalamazoo.
The Eagles wasted no time picking right up where they left off in yesterday's victory, as they scored the game's first goal just 1:10 into the contest. Michael Lant (5th) worked his way into the left circle and fired a backhander into the back of the net to put the Jr. K-Wings down one goal.
Soo would extend their lead later in the first period, this time, they took advantage of the five minutes of extra man hockey, as Robbie Payne received a major for elbowing. With just five seconds left in the penalty, at the 16:01 mark, Sean Murphy (13th) put Soo on the board again with a rocket shot from the slot.
The Jr. K-Wings were outshot in the first period 18-6; they were able to do much better in the second period, earning some quality looks and a penalty shot, but they were unable to score. The Eagles were also scoreless in the second period, and the period ended the same way it began: with the Eagles leading 2-0.
Kalamazoo's first forward line of Taylor Burden, Kyle Gattelaro, and Payne has been on a scoring tear of late, and that line was able to get Kalamazoo on the board Sunday. Gattelaro (11th) cut the deficit to 2-1 at 7:24 in the third. Burden was credited with the assist.
Unfortunately for the Jr. K-Wings, this would be as close as they would come to tying the game up. With less than 30 seconds remaining, The Eagles got a pair of empty net goals from Jared VanWormer (20th) and Brandon Adams (13th) to seal the 4-1 victory.
Soo finishes the season with a 6-2-0 record against Kalamazoo.
The Jr. K-Wings will be back in Kalamazoo on March 9th for their final game of the season with the Port Huron Fighting Falcons.
