Somerset Patriots News Release
Sugar Land, Texas - The Somerset Patriots (6-2) held off a late rally from the Sugar Land Skeeters (7-1) Saturday night to take the second game 7-6 at Constellation Field.
"It is always tough to get a that first win against a team that had not lost yet this year," said Somerset Patriots manager Brett Jodie. "It was good for us to get that one under our belt."
Somerset opened up the scoring with a three-run second inning. A two-base error from Skeeters first baseman Matt Chavez on a ground ball from Julio Borbon led to the first two runs of the inning before a Scott Kelly RBI single topped off the scoring. Sugar Land responded in the bottom of the frame on Welington Dotel's RBI groundout.
The Skeeters tied up the game in the bottom of the third on an Anthony Giansanti (1) solo home run to right-center field and an RBI single from Albert Cordero. The Patriots answered in the top of the fifth with back-to-back two-out RBI singles from Adam Weisenburger and Danny Dorn to regain a 5-3 lead.
Julio Borbon added to the Somerset lead in the sixth inning with a two-run double to right centerfield. Sugar Land responded with a two-out Derek Norris RBI single in the seventh inning to cut the lead to three before an emotional ninth inning.
Ryan Kelly came on for the save in the ninth. Two runs would score on a Norris two-run single to bring the Skeeters within a run five batters into the frame. After a runner's interference was called on Norris for the second out of the inning, Kelly struck out Courtney Hawkins to end the ballgame.
Mike Antonini (2-0) earned win after he spend 2.2 scoreless innings of relief. Konner Wade (1-1) took the loss after yielding four runs on six hits in 1.1 innings of relief. Kelly (1) earned the save in the ninth. Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision.
"Antonini didn't just get the job done, but he was quick with his innings too," continued Jodie. "He did an outstanding job to keep us in the game. He was able to minimize pitches and keep the game moving."
Southpaw Rick Teasley (0-1, 6.75 ERA) takes the mound for Somerset Sunday afternoon in the series-finale against Sugar Land righty Tyler Badamo (1-0, 0.00 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 pm CT (3:05 pm ET).
The 2018 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford continues on the road until Tuesday, May 8th when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark to take on the Road Warriors at 6:35 pm. For tickets, visit www.somersetpatriots.com.
