Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(Central Islip, NY.) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (1-7) fell in game two of the series against the Long Island Ducks (5-3) 6-5, behind a walk-off homerun from Jordany Valdespin.
Johnny Bladel got the game started with a single, advancing to scoring position on a single from Joey Wong. Frank Martinez followed with a third straight single, scoring Bladel to put the Blue Crabs on the board. A two-run homerun from Edwin Garcia added two more in the second inning, giving Brandon Cumpton an early 3-0 lead.
The Ducks responded, putting up a run in back-to-back innings. Lew Ford singled to lead off the bottom of the second, coming around to score on a Cody Puckett double. Dan Lyons started the third the same way, leading off with a single. Three batters later, Travis Snider doubled Lyons in, cutting it down to a one-run lead.
The Blue Crabs responded with one of their own in the top of the fourth. Andrew Daniel started the inning off with a double, scoring on a double from Bladel later in the inning. They added another run in the top of the fifth, extending the lead to 5-3. Austin Green, Cory Vaughn, and Daniel all singled in the inning, with Daniel driving in Vaughn to pick up the RBI in the inning.
Long Island responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Lyons reached on a hit-by-pitch, before an error put two men in scoring position. Robert Garcia followed that with a single, scoring both to cut the lead back down to one.
After a quiet sixth inning, the Ducks were able to tie the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Valdespin singled with one out to put a man aboard, when an error at third base allowed him to move up to second. A walk to Snider loaded the bases, setting up a sacrifice fly from Ford to even the game at 5-5.
Neither team could get anything going in the eighth, sending the game all square into the ninth. After a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the ninth, the Ducks came up with a chance to be walk-off winners. A flyout started the inning, before Valdespin ended the game with a walk-off solo homerun, finalizing the game 6-5 in favor of Long Island.
The Blue Crabs return to action Sunday, May 6th for the finale of the three-game series against the Ducks. Southern Maryland will send LHP Drake Britton (0-0, 0.00) to the mound, making his first start of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 P.M. on Sunday at Bethpage Ballpark.
