Some Thoughts About The Raging Fires In Southern California

October 24, 2007 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Georgia Gwizzlies News Release

Indianapolis, IN. ABA Georgia Gwizzlies co-owner and coach Embry Malone graduated from Pepperdine University in 1977. He has many close friends and associates in Southern California. The following are excerpts from an email sent to the league office.

"Joe. My phones have been ringing off the hook about the raging fires in Malibu and Southern California. Like everyone else, I have been watching the coverage and am aghast with the situation there. It is so very serious. After graduation I served as an assistant coach and instructor at the Malibu campus. My heart goes out to everyone there.

I spoke with Paul Skopenhauer, a former teammate and friend and also Gary Colson, our Head Coach when we played (since retired living in Santa Barbara). All of us were are still distraught from the passing of our dear friend Dennis Johnson last winter - and now this. Last summer, Chris Sangster, an alumni administrator, encouraged me to relocate back to Southern California. I almost did. And would be there today experiencing this terrible tragedy with my close friends Donna Johnson, Sherry Poitier, Hazel Gordy (Barry Gordy's daughter) and movie director Ron Howard.

Would you please put something on the website that tells everyone there how much I feel their pain and while I am so very far away, I feel like I'm there with them. They and Pepperdine are very close to my heart."

Embry. Everyone in the ABA feels as you do. The courage and spirit of the people of Southern California, including the heroic firefighters, law enforcement officers, military personnel, city, county and state officials is truly amazing. And our prayers are with all of them.

Thanks.

Joe Newman

ABA CEO
