Saint John Riptide News Release

Souleymane Wane, the 6'11 starting center for the '99 University of Connecticut NCAA title team, has agreed to join the Manchester Millrats of the American Basketball Association (ABA).

Wane anchored the middle for a Huskies team that featured future NBA star Richard Hamilton (Detroit Pistons), and enigmatic point guard Kalid El-Amin. That season UCONN posted a 34-2 record, and upset a heavily favored Duke Blue Devil team for the crown. As a senior in 2000-2001, Wane played alongside current Washington Wizards star forward Caron Butler.

In his senior year, Wane averaged 4.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game and was second on the team in blocked shots. He finished as the seventh all-time leader in blocked shots in Connecticut history.

Following his collegiate career, Wane entered the NBA draft and attended the Portsmouth Invitational and Chicago Pre-Draft camps. Wane's overseas resume includes stints in the Adriatic League, and in Japan, Poland, and Germany. As a native of Senegal, he also played for the Sengalese National Team in 1999 and 2005 in the African Championships.

In 2006 while playing in Germany, he suffered a career threatening knee injury. After successful surgery, and a year and a half of rehabilitation and conditioning, Wane is back on the court playing basketball.

"Its not often that you find a player of Souleymane's stature and experience at this level," explained Millrats Coach Lessett. "He will be a key part of what we do, and we couldn't be more thrilled to have him on the team."

The Millrats are a new entry in the American Basketball Association (ABA), and will play their home games in the 'Fieldhouse' on the campus of Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, NH. The season and home opener is set for Sunday November 11, 2007 at 4:35 p.m. versus the Boston Blizzard. Single game, season and half season ticket plans are on sale now on www.manchestermillrats.com or by calling 1-866-9-GET TIX (1-866-943-8849).

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
