Soja's pitching baffles Flyers Bernal's clutch hit gives Scorpions new life in victory

FULLERTON, Calif. ? Steve Soja?s pitching and the timely hitting of Hector Bernal helped propel the Yuma Scorpions past the Orange County Flyers 3-2 Friday night at Goodwin Field.

The right-hander from New York pitched nine innings, striking out six, allowing just the two runs on three hits.

After falling behind 2-0 after the first two innings, Soja no-hit Orange County, keeping the Scorpions in the game until their bats woke up late.

?I felt like I had good stuff and I felt like if we could score some runs off their starter that would be able to hold them,? Soja said. With the win he improved to 6-3.

The visitors trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the top of third when Jordan Prado knocked in Mike Goss on an RBI single.

Yuma tied the game at 2-2 on Hector Bernal?s RBI triple to right-center scored A.J. Valentine from second base.

?The guys were going crazy, but I was just trying to keep a level head. That definitely got the guys pumped up,? Soja said of Bernal?s hit that tied the game in the seventh. ?Just getting tied; just knowing that it was a brand new ball game. It definitely gave us some energy.?

With the game tied in the top of the eighth, the Scorpions took the lead for good when Prado hustled from third after a throw got out away from Orange County first baseman Peanut Williams, allowing the shortstop to score.

Maikel Jova was given an infield single on the play, but it was the wide throw by Flyers third baseman Brett Thomas that have Prado just the few seconds he needed to break toward home.

?Jordan made a great read on the ball getting away and it was great,? Soja said of the game-winning run.

Prado, Jova and Henry Calderon each had two hits, as Yuma outhit Orange County 9-3.

Flyers starter Mike Natale did his best to try to match Soja pitch for pitch through the first seven innings, striking out nine.

However, the right-hander was given the loss (3-3) after giving up the game-tying and game-winning runs.

The two teams play a double-header today with Game 1 starting at 5:05 p.m. and Game 2 scheduled for 7:45 p.m. Both games can be heard on the Scorpions flash-ship station, KBLU 560 AM as well as YumaScorpions.com.
