Sockers visit Baja South

June 8, 2004 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
San Diego Sockers News Release

San Diego Sockers' defender David Beltran and former Sockers Ralf Wilhelms and Diego Terry traveled to Guerrero Negro in Baja California South to treat more than 400 children from the area to a soccer-specific assembly this past week. Along with learning various skills from the game of soccer, the children also came to understand how such soccer skills can transfer into lessons in life. For example, while a child can pass the ball to a teammate, that same child can also ³pass² on harmful influences in life, such as drugs and tobacco. The visit was the first step in developing a relationship between the Sockers and Mexico.

"Our visit was well received in the community and we are now formulating the plans to extend our efforts in the area," stated Sockers' Executive Vice President, Wilhelms when asked about the trip.

The excitement of the visit started to boil over following the assembly when the school was presented with Sockers' posters for the children. Beltran, Terry and Wilhelms stayed for over an hour to see that there was not a child left without an autographed Sockers' poster. Later that day, Terry and Beltran instructed girls & boys on the basic techniques of soccer at one of their local fields. 50 players enjoyed the innovative teaching process and valuable points to improve their soccer skills for the future.

The following day, the Sockers met with local area coaches to demonstrate coaching techniques and tactics. The Guerrero Negro coaches found the teachings to be new and enlightening. The 3 day stay in Guerrero Negro left a lasting impression on a city that welcomed and embraced the efforts of the San Diego Sockers.
