Sockers Steamroll St. Louis

In their most dominant performance of the season, the San Diego Sockers defeated the visiting St. Louis Steamers 8-1 at the Sports Arena, to improve their record to 5-6. Fresh off their first road victory the night before at Dallas, the Sockers showed no signs of fatigue with their stifling defense and relentless scoring that began less than a minute into the contest.

The Sockers jumped on the Steamers right out of the gate with a Mariano Bollella goal :58 into the game assisted by Mark Ughy. Later in the first period, Jacob Ward scored an unassisted goal at 8:27, his first of the season. San Diego went into halftime with a 3-0 lead after a Tony Velazquez goal from the right side of the net, assisted by Mauricio Alegre at 6:45 of the 2nd period.

Bollella led the charge once again in the second half with his second goal of the night 2:14 into the 3rd. The assist went to Paul Wright who leads the team with five on the season. The Sockers continued in the third period with two more goals, one by Nino DaSilva at 8:36 and another by Kevin Legg at 12:17 that was assisted by DaSilva.

The scoring for the Sockers did not end there. Matt Johnson got into the mix with a goal at 7:45 that was assisted by Bollella, his game-leading third point of the night. Jake Bleyenberg of the Steamers ended the Sockers chances of a shutout with a goal assisted by goalkeeper Brett Phillips ten seconds later at 7:55.

Sockers defender David Beltran of the Sockers put an exclamation point on their most impressive win of the season with a restart goal at 12:47 of the fourth period.

Sockers defender Sean Bowers led the team with seven blocks for the night while Sockers goalkeeper Victor Nogueira improved his record to 5-6, saving 11 of 12 shots faced. Jeff DiMaria of the Steamers had two blocks in the game follower by several other teammates with one each. Steamers Goalkeeper Brett Phillips allowed eight goals on 25 shots, dropping his record to 2-6.

With this victory, the Sockers extended their home win steak to four and record their first back-to-back home and away games since returning to the MISL in 2001. The Sockers next home game return to action Saturday, December 20 against the Dallas Sidekicks at 7 p.m.
