Sockers Sign Free Agent Gordy Gurson to Bolster Attack
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Sockers today announced the signing of free agent midfielder Gordy Gurson to a Major Arena Soccer League contract, beginning with the 2020-21 season. As per league and club policy, terms of the deal were not announced.
"I'm thrilled to join an organization in San Diego that is committed to nothing less than winning," said Gurson of his decision to sign with the Sockers, "My goal is to help the Sockers bring that 15th championship home, for the club, the fans, and the city."
Gurson, 28, joins the Sockers for his seventh pro campaign in the MASL, having previously played with Florida, Orlando, Cedar Rapids, St. Louis and Tacoma/Seattle. Known as 'Kid Dynamite', Gurson was named the MASL Rookie of the Year and All-MASL Second Team in 2014-15, when he combined to score 46 goals with 18 assists (64 points) in 23 matches playing for the Seattle Impact/Tacoma Stars and the St. Louis Ambush. Gurson earned third-team All-MASL honors in 2015-16, combining to score 33 goals in 18 games for St. Louis and Cedar Rapids.
In 2018-19 with the Orlando Seawolves, Gurson finished fourth in the MASL in total points, accruing 34 goals and 24 assists (58 points) in 24 matches. In 2019-20, Gurson joined the Florida Tropics and helped lead the club's turnaround to become Eastern Conference champions, netting 21 points (8 goals, 13 assists) in eleven matches.
Overall, in 118 career MASL matches, Gurson has scored 174 goals with 88 assists (262 points), averaging 2.2 points per match.
"We see Gordy as an important player for our club moving forward," said Sockers general manager Sean Bowers of the signing, "Not only is he a proven and natural goal scorer, Gordy is also a real positive team player who will be an impact performer, both on the floor and in the room."
Gurson is also a three-time member of the U.S. National Arena Soccer Team, playing in the WMF World Cup in the USA (2015), Tunisia (2017) and Australia (2019), and helping bring home the WMF World Cup in 2015. Born and raised in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, Gurson attended Stevenson High School, where he earned All-State honors in 2009 in soccer. Gurson spent one year at the University of Memphis and three at Robert Morris University, where he was a three-time All-American.
The Sockers played the 2019-20 MASL campaign with a record of 15-6 when the league season came to a sudden end due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2019-20 regular season has been declared concluded with no Ron Newman Cup champion. The Sockers will look to take the field in search of their fifteenth indoor championship when the league resumes play for the 2020-21 season, at a time to be determined.
