San Diego Sockers News Release
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - In their final home game of the 2003-04 season, the Sockers were shutout 3-0 by the Monterrey Fury. After three quarters of scoreless action it was the Fury's Victor Quiroz who scored the game-winning goal.
For the first time since the December 13 match against the Dallas Sidekicks, the game remained scoreless. Although neither team was able to get one past the opposing goalkeeper, the first half was an exciting exhibition of offensive futility. Monterrey out-shot the Sockers 16-11 in the first 30 minutes of play.
The Fury's Victor Quiroz took the air out of the arena with a goal at 2:11 of the fourth quarter that broke the scoreless tie. The goal, assisted by defender Genoni Martinez, came off a rebound that bounced right in front of Quiroz's foot. Armando Valdivia added an insurance goal at 12:31 off an assist from Marco Coria and Monterrey put the exclamation point on their first shutout victory of the season, when Marco Lopez fooled Sockers goalkeeper Riley Swift for a shoot-out goal at 14:13.
The only other time San Diego was shutout this season was after a 5-0 loss to the Philadelphia KiXX on January 17.
Sockers' goalkeeper Victory Nogueira saved eight of 10 shots faced. The loss dropped Nogueira's record to 13-20, his first losing season since 1989-90. Sean Bowers recorded two blocks on the night leaving him one shy of 1,000 for his career.
The Sockers head to Kansas City on Saturday, April 3 for their final game of the season as they take on the playoff-bound Comets.
