San Diego Sockers News Release
The San Diego Sockers will square off against playoff participants Dallas and Turlock sandwiched around a game with traditional power Monterrey in their first three home games of the Professional Arena Soccer League 2013-14 regular season schedule, released today by the league. All Sockers home games will be played at the Valley View Casino Center.
"This may be our toughest schedule in five years," said Sockers general manager John Kentera, "Starting the season with the Dallas Sidekicks is a tremendous test, and it won't be getting much easier any time soon. The Sockers look forward to competing for a fifth straight championship, but we know the challenge is as great as it's ever been."
In the newly expanded 20-team PASL, the Sockers will compete in the Pacific Division alongside the Las Vegas Legends, Toros de Mexico (Tijuana), Turlock Express, Sacramento Surge, and expansion teams Ontario Fury and Bay Area Rosal.
Following their November 9th season opener against Dallas, the Sockers will host the Monterrey Flash on November 16th. A former member of the MISL, the Flash have competed for years in the Liga Mexicana de Futbol Rapido and now take their talented franchise to the PASL. The Turlock Express, who finished second in the Pacific Division to the Sockers last year and offered a playoff scare, visit on December 21st.
The Ontario Fury, an expansion team featuring some of the relocated talent of the now folded Anaheim Bolts, will make two visits to the Valley View Casino Center on December 28th and February 9th. The Las Vegas Legends, who pushed the Sockers into overtime in last year's PASL semi-finals, make their only regular season appearance at the VVCC on January 11th. Last year's PASL-Premier champions, the Bay Area Rosal, have been promoted to the top league and make their first appearance in San Diego on January 18th. The rival Toros de Mexico will take on the Sockers February 9th in the team's regular season home finale.
A daunting road schedule will include a four-game trip to face Turlock and Sacramento (November 22nd-23rd), Ontario and Las Vegas (December 12th and 15 th). San Diego will make two trips to Mexico this year to play PASL games, first making their annual visit to Tijuana (January 5th). After a second visit to Ontario (January 19th), the Sockers travel to Monterrey, Mexico to take on the Saltillo Rancho Seco (January 25th) and Monterrey Flash (January 26th).
The Sockers are the four-time defending champions of the Professional Arena Soccer League and have captured fourteen major indoor championships in franchise history. The team will resume their pursuit of "one for the thumb" and a fifth straight championship November 9th at the Valley View Casino Center. Season tickets for the 2013-14 campaign are available by phone at (866) 799-GOAL.
