San Diego Sockers News Release
The San Diego Sockers (14-6) begin their march to the Ron Newman Cup playoffs, hosting the Tacoma Stars (8-10) on Sunday night at Pechanga Arena San Diego.
The Sockers are 2-0 against the Stars this season, winning on November 30 in Tacoma 7-3, and by an 8-6 count on December 22 in San Diego.
The Sockers can finish no lower than fourth in the Western Conference, and will clinch second place with a combination of two San Diego wins and/or Ontario losses.
San Diego edged the defending Ron Newman Cup champion Milwaukee Wave in shootouts last Saturday, prevailing by a final score of 6-5.
The Stars are hoping to build momentum off a big win as well after defeating the Eastern Conference-leading Florida Tropics 4-3 last weekend. The Stars will play the Fury in Ontario on Saturday night prior to the Sockers-Stars contest.
San Diego is 8-1 at home this season, while the Stars are 3-6 on the road. The Sockers are led in scoring by Kraig Chiles, who netted his 20th goal and 30th point of the season against the Wave. Leonardo de Oliveira is on a five-match goals streak, with seven goals over the streak, including a pair against Milwaukee.
Defending MASL MVP Nick Perera, the club's player/head coach, leads Tacoma with 22 goals and 42 points. Forward Michael Ramos is having a breakout season with a team-leading 26 goals.
