San Diego Sockers News Release

SAN DIEGO, Calif. The San Diego Sockers have announced that midfielder Paul Dougherty has officially joined the team. The England native has trained with the team for several weeks and looks to add depth to the San Diego midfield.

Dougherty won four championship rings with the Sockers in the original MISL, including the Sockers' last title in 1992. The 5' 2" midfielder ranks eighth all-time on the Sockers' scoring charts with 140 goals and 86 assists in 204 games.

"Before when I played they would always tell me I was too small, and now they say that I'm too old," said Dougherty when asked about returning to the Sockers' line-up.

Dougherty has been out of soccer professionally for a few years, but was named the WISL Most Valuable Player in his last season with the Houston Hotshots. He has been spending time in the coaching ranks, specifically with the San Diego Nomads.

Dougherty and the Sockers(10-11) face a tough test this weekend as they play their first back-to-back road contests of the season. The team will travel to St. Louis to take on the Steamers on a Saturday afternoon affair, and follow up with a Sunday game at the Convocation Center on the campus of Cleveland State University against the Force.

In the 2003-04 MISL season San Diego is 1-0 against the Steamers, but has been unable to defeat the Force in two game. Catch all the exciting action of the weekend's games on ESPN Radio 800 or for the Spanish listeners on AM 1470 Radio Unica.
