Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL "" The dark clouds came in as quickly as the Stone Crabs amassed a 10-0 lead on the Cubs in the second game of this four-game series. Picking up right where Austin Pruitt left off with eight shut out innings on Friday night, Blake Snell carried the torch without letting it dim. Having not allowed a hit through his first five and a third innings, Snell threw a strike to Marco Hernandez before a nasty rainstorm invaded Charlotte Sports Park. A little more than thirty minutes later, the umpires called the whole thing off and Snell was face-to-face with history in the Stone Crabs' first no-hitter in team history.

All the breaks have been going Charlotte's way lately, and that continued in the first against Cubs starter Tyler Skulina. The large righthander was making his Florida State League debut, and the nerves appeared to take over throughout the frame. He hit Tommy Coyle with a 2-0 fastball before letting Ryan Hanigan, down for his second rehab assignment, walk on four pitches. Patrick Leonard blooped an RBI single into center for a 1-0 lead, and two batters later, Tyler Goeddel lifted a sacrifice fly to right to make it 2-0. The final run came in later on when Skulina's second wild pitch scored Leonard from third, signaling the end for the second-year pitcher after just one inning.

Snell's first two perfect innings ended with a pair of strikeouts before his only real trouble in the third. Two walks to the bottom of the Cubs order brought up leadoff hitter Jacob Hannemann with one out. A 1-0 fastball tied the center fielder up, and a tomahawk swing that knocked him to the ground produced an easy grounder back Snell for an inning-ending 1-6-3 double play. Shortly thereafter, more help arrived in the bottom of the third against Nathan Dorris.

A one out single by Maxx Tissenbaum opened the floodgates because Goeddel's grounder to second was thrown away by Gioskar Amaya on a potential inning-ending double play. Johnny Field's slow chopper to short was then bobbled by Marco Hernandez to reload the bases. A run scoring single by Josh Sale and a fielder's choice grounder by Granden Goetzman added two more runs for a 5-0 lead.

Coyle started another outburst in the fourth with a base hit into right before Hanigan singled him to third. Tissenbaum's one out double to the right field wall brought in a run to make it 6-0. Goeddel was hit with an 0-2 pitch before Dorris struck out Field on a 2-2 pitch for the second out. Sale's infield single scored Hanigan and Goetzman's three-run double to the left field wall with the bases loaded got the Stone Crabs into double digits for the seventh time this season at 10-0. Snell struck out four more Cubs in the fourth and fifth and returned for the sixth right before the rain came. Bijan Rademacher lined out to third and Amaya walked to turn the lineup over to Hannemann at the top. A slow chopper to short was bobbled by Querecuto to put runners at first and second, but the storm arrived and the game was called a little more than 30 minutes later to give the "˜Crabs their eighth straight victory. It also gave Snell his first no-hitter as well as the first in franchise history.

The teams meet again on Sunday night at 5:00 PM when Reinaldo Lopez (6-4, 3.40 ERA) goes up against the Cubs Juan Paniagua (1-1, 4.50 ERA). The Stone Crabs are having another back to school giveaway and will be handing out lunch boxes to the first 500 fans in attendance.
