Columbus Cottonmouths News Release
The Columbus Cottonmouths have made some roster moves in preparation for their season opener this Friday, Oct. 22 at home against the Pensacola Ice Flyers. Defensemen Nicholas Kuqali and Lorne Tessier and forwards Dan Lind and Blake Miller were released on Sunday. Goaltender Andrew Loewen and forward Zeanan Ziemer have signed with the Snakes. The Cottonmouths roster is now at 18 players.
Loewen joins the Snakes after attending training camp with the Colorado Eagles of the CHL. He will join the team early this week. Andrew comes to Columbus after four seasons (2006-10) of Division-I hockey at Canisius College. He left his name in the record books at Canisius, owning the record for highest save percentage in school history at .913. He also ranks second in school history in total saves with 2,463.
Ziemer comes to Columbus for his professional debut after one season with the Dauphin Kings of the MJHL. Prior to that, he spent three seasons with the OCN Blizzard before being traded to the Kings. In 48 games last season, Ziemer picked up 76 points. He also registered 18 points in 13 playoff games. The 21-year old hails from Brandon, Manitoba and was in camp with the Laredo Bucks of the CHL earlier this season.
The Snakes played a pair of exhibition games over the weekend, falling 6-3 Friday against Pensacola and 4-2 Saturday in Mississippi. Sam Bowles had an unassisted goal Friday, while rookie Matt Kinnunen added a powerplay goal and Kyle Lundale registered a shorthanded goal. Brent Clarke and Blake Miller each scored for the Snakes Saturday night.
The Cottonmouths, Columbus Civic Center and Columbus Hockey Association are hosting a 'Skate with the Snakes' event Tuesday, Oct. 19 from 6-8 p.m., for children interested in registering for youth hockey. Anyone with children who may be interested in playing youth hockey is invited to attend. Kids wishing to skate are asked to bring a hockey or bicycle helmet; skates will be available for use at the Civic Center.
The Snakes kickoff the 2010-11 season at the Snake Pit this Friday, Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. A special pre-game ceremony honoring longtime captain 'The Chief' Craig Stahl will be held, with his #32 being retired prior to the game. Also, the first 2,500 fans will receive a magnetic schedule, courtesy of TIC Federal Credit Union and WXTX-Fox 54.
