Snakes Add Two More to Roster

The Columbus Cottonmouths have re-signed forward Brett Hammond and defenseman Tom Maldonado for the 2011-12 season. Both players will return to Columbus for their second season as a Snake.

Hammond, 30, joined the Snakes last season as one of only two veterans on the roster. Prior to coming to Columbus, Brett spent two seasons with the Missouri Mavericks and Colorado Eagles of the CHL, where he collected 52 points in 108 games. He also spent 2004-07 with the Fresno Falcons of the ECHL. Last season, Hammond collected 40 points in 54 games to finish third on the Snakes roster in points.

Maldonado, 26, joined the Snakes in early January after spending the first half of the season in the Netherlands with the Geleen Smoke Eaters, collecting 17 points in 23 games. Prior to that, he spent time in the CHL with the Missouri Mavericks, Tulsa Oilers and New Mexico Scorpions. In Columbus' final 29 regular season games, the Bronx, N.Y native collected 11 points.

"Last year, Brett came in and provided leadership and consistency for our younger players," head coach Jerome Bechard said. "He is a class guy in the community. Tom was brought to my attention by a couple of our players and joined us in January last season. He was a huge part of our late success on the powerplay. He is great in the locker room and with fans, which is one of the biggest things I look for in a player. I want players willing to buy into what we stand for here in Columbus, hard work on the ice and care about the community. Both of these guys fit the bill."

The Snakes have now signed four returning players for the upcoming season, including forwards Sam Bowles and Hammond, defenseman Maldonado and goaltender Andrew Loewen. The Cottonmouths kick off their 2011-12 season with a pair of home games Friday and Saturday, October 21 and 22 at 7:30 p.m.
