Columbus Cottonmouths News Release

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Columbus Cottonmouths of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) announce the signing of brothers Andreas and Mathias Persson to their training camp roster. They will join returning forward Matt Gingera on the ice when the SPHL preseason kicks off in early October.

This will be both Persson brothers' first foray into North American hockey as each of them has played the game extensively in Europe. They both come with one thing that cannot be taught no matter where the rink is located: size. Andreas, at 25, stands 6'5" and weighs 225 pounds, while younger brother Mathias, 21, checks in an inch taller at 6'6" but weighs in at 220.

Andreas is a defenseman by position, while Mathias is a forward. Despite Andreas's size, he is also an offensive-minded defenseman; in the past 89 games he has played professionally in Europe since the 2010-11 season, Andreas has scored 62 points (16G, 46A). Mathias has had similar numbers over the past two seasons, tallying 48 points (25G, 23A) since 2012-13 with teams in the Netherlands and Norway.

"Andreas is a 6'4 puck moving defenseman with experience. His presence should be felt in our end, getting us out of our defensive zone quicker and I anticipate him helping out on the power play," head coach Jerome Bechard said. "Mathias, his 6'6 little brother, is a big talented forward that skates well for his size. His strength, vision and his size will make him tough to compete against. I anticipate him using his size and strength to score some big goals by just going hard to the net. I have heard nothing but good things about them as people and team mates."

The Cottonmouths will begin their 11th season as an original member of the SPHL on October 24 when they host the Knoxville Ice Bears at the Columbus Civic Center. Season tickets, group sales, and sponsorship opportunities are available now for the upcoming season and individual tickets go on sale October 1.
