Smokies Homer Past Generals, Ending Win Streak

KODAK, TENN. (JULY 14, 2012) - The Generals saw their four-game winning streak come to an end Saturday night at Smokies Park, falling to Tennessee 4-2. Jackson remains on top of the Southern League North second half standings at 13-9 and are 55-37 overall on the season.

Rich Poythress extended his second-longest hitting streak of the season to 10 games in the second inning with a double. That set up a 2-out RBI single from Ralph Henriquez that scored Poythress and Jackson led 1-0.

After a 32 minute weather delay, play resumed in the bottom of the second inning. With two on, Juan Apodaco belted a 3-run homer to right giving the Smokies a 3-1 edge.

The Generals pulled to within a run, at 3-2, in the top of the fourth on a solo homer to left by Kalian Sams. The homer was Sams' 8th of the season.

The Smokies quickly got the run back in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo homer to right from Mike Burgess. The Smokies led 4-2.

Taijuan Walker (5-5) made his first start since July 5th and allowed 4 runs on 3 hits in 6.0 innings of work, suffering the loss. Walker walked a season-high 5 batters and struck out 6. Dae-Eun Rhee allowed 2 runs on 5 hits in 5.0 innings of work to earn the win for the Smokies. Generals relievers Jandy Sena and Jose Jimenez combined for 2.0 scoreless innings behind Walker.

Ralph Henriquez paced the Generals with a 2-for-3 night at the plate with an RBI.

The Generals continue their four-game series at Tennessee on Sunday afternoon, with first pitch set for 4:00 p.m. CT. Jackson will send to the mound LHP James Paxton (3-3, 3.46) while RHP Dallas Beeler (4-6, 3.99) will make the start for Tennessee.
