Knoxville Smokies News Release

Kodak, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies (28-22) fell to the Birmingham Barons (19-31) 7-6 Saturday night at Smokies Stadium in the fifth game of the series. The Smokies rallied from an early seven-run deficit and had the potential-winning run base in the ninth but could not finish the comeback.

Birmingham put up seven quick runs off Peyton Remy (L, 3-1). After plating one in the top of the first, the Barons scored three times in each of the next two innings to knock Remy from the game. LHP Bryan King came on in relief and shut down the Barons for 3.1 shutout innings, giving the Smokies an opportunity to come back.

First baseman Matt Mervis started the scoring for Tennessee with a solo shot in the fourth, his third home run in as many games. The Smokies put up a five-spot in the fifth, highlighted by a three-run homer from Jake Slaughter in his first game with the Smokies since being called up from Single-A. Tennessee fell just short in the bottom of the ninth, stranding the winning run on first.
