Knoxville Smokies News Release

PEARL, MS- The Smokies have dropped their seventh consecutive game in a 8-2 series opening loss in Mississippi. Smokies starter Manuel Espinoza made his first start since early August and only tossed 2.2 innings, allowing three early runs in the loss.

The Braves scored three runs in the second when the Smokies weren't able to capitalize on an inning ending double play. Brandon Parker singled to make it 1-0, followed by a Drew Campbell double to score two more and make it 3-0 Mississippi.

The Smokies got on the board with Matt Shaw's first career Double-A home run to make it 3-1. In the top of the sixth inning, Cole Roederer singled to score Shaw and cut the lead in half at 4-2. Tennessee would leave the bases loaded in the sixth and lose the momentum in the ballgame.

Mississippi scored four more runs in the sixth and seventh innings to run away with the game and take the series opener 8-2.
