Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-Waterloo Black Hawk veteran Craig Smith was not ranked in the January NHL Central Scouting midterm rankings. Saturday he was the first Waterloo Black Hawk selected in the 2009 NHL Draft in Montreal.

The Nashville Predators picked Smith with the seventh selection in the fourth round and 98th overall, well ahead of his spot in the final Central Scouting rankings, 177th among North American skaters.

The Black Hawk captain had a remarkable third year in Waterloo during 2008-2009. Smith registered 76 points (28 goals and 48 assists), the most for any Black Hawk since Jason Blake's 100 point season in 1993-1994. Smith tied for second in league scoring and finished fourth in plus-minus at +32. He was also the captain of the U.S. Junior Select Team, which won a gold medal at the World Junior Challenge in Alberta during November. Over a three year Black Hawk career, Smith appeared in 157 regular season games, with 49 career goals and 68 assists. The Madison native will return home to start his college career with the Wisconsin Badgers this fall.

Waterloo has never previously had a player drafted by the Nashville Predators. Former Black Hawk defenseman Mark Eaton played for the Predators from 2000-2006.
