Sliders Take Out Gems To Start Final Home Series Of Season
August 4, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Springfield Sliders News Release
The Springfield Sliders started off their final home series of the year with a 6-4 win tonight against the Quincy Gems at Robin Roberts Stadium. The Sliders' bats were hot right from the words "play ball" as they picked up four hits in the very first inning, scoring two runs on a double by 1B Matt Tellor, who leads the Prospect League with 65 RBIs on the year. The Gems would tie the game with two runs in the third, and those would be the only runs the Gems would get off of Sliders' starter Nick Musec tonight. The Sliders would take the lead right back in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs to take a 4-2 lead. LF Mike Fitzgerald drove in a run with an RBI double, and DH Reagan Fowler drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly. In the fourth, CF Wade Rothermich added to the lead, picking up an RBI on a single, and in the fifth it was 3B David Kerian who drove in a run with an RBI single of his own. The score would stay 6-2 until the eighth, when Quincy picked up a run to close the gap to one. In the ninth, Ryan Aper came in to get the final three outs, and it started off shaky as he gave up back to back singles to start the inning off. However, the Sliders turned a 6-4-3 double play behind him, keeping the Gems to just one run in the inning, and allowing Aper to pick up his first save of the year. The win went to Nick Musec who went 5 innings, giving up just 2 runs (just 1 of the 2 was earned), 3 hits, and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts. The season series between the two teams is now 6-5 in favor of Quincy, going into tomorrow's series finale. Tomorrow marks the Sliders' final home game of the 2012 season, as they take on the Gems again, with first pitch set for 5:05.
