Sliders' Streak Snapped As Comeback Falls Short Against Cavemen

The Springfield Sliders had their four game winning streak snapped tonight by the Hannibal Cavemen 11-10 at Robin Roberts Stadium. For the second straight night, Hannibal took the lead in the very first inning. In the bottom of the first, Springfield took a 2-1 lead after DH Mike Fitzgerald hit a two run homer, his thirteenth of the year. Hannibal had an answer in the second, tying it up with a run, and then taking a 5-2 lead with a three run third. In the bottom of the third, 1B Matt Tellor hit a two run homer, his fifteenth of the year, and RF Wade Rothermich drove in Fitzgerald with a fielder's choice to tie the game at 5 after three. The game didn't stay tied for long, as Hannibal picked up two more runs in the fourth to go back in front 7-5, and chase Sliders' starter Zac Wittmus. The Sliders would tie it up in the sixth when Tellor hit an RBI double, and another run scored on an error. In the seventh, Hannibal's Zach Nichols led off the inning with a home run, giving the Cavemen the lead again. The lead then ballooned to four after a three run ninth to make it 11-7. In the bottom of the ninth, the Sliders' bats woke up again as CF Ryan Aper, pinch hitter Reagan Fowler, and 2B Michael Hurwitz all hit RBI singles, cutting the Cavemen lead to one, and putting both the tying and winning runs on with one out. However, the Sliders' comeback efforts would end there, and those runs would be left stranded on the bases. After playing ten games in the last ten days, the Sliders are off tomorrow, but will be back in action Tuesday, when they start a four game road trip at Quincy.
The Springfield Sliders are members of the Prospect League, playing at historic Robin Roberts Stadium. The Sliders are members of the Western Division along with the Danville (IL) Dans, DuBois County (IN) Bombers, Hannibal (MO) Cavemen, Quincy (IL) Gems, and Terre Haute (IN) Rex.
