Sliders Shake Off Errors To Sweep Dans

The Springfield Sliders knocked off the Danville Dans 8-7 to sweep the weekend home and home series and pick up their third straight win. Danville scored three unearned runs off of Sliders' starter Ryan Aper, who was making his first start for the Sliders, in the second inning to take the early lead. Springfield pulled one back in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by 2B Michael Hurwitz to cut the lead to 3-1. Things would stay like that until the fifth inning, when the first five Sliders' hitters picked up hits, and all eventually scored. 1B Matt Tellor, LF Mike Fitzgerald, DH Matt Stevens, and SS Matt Highland all picked up RBIs in the inning, with another run scoring on an error. An insurance run was added when CF Wade Rothermich singled in Fitzgerald in the sixth inning to put the Sliders in front 7-3. The Sliders would hold that lead until the eighth inning when the Dans took advantage of three sliders errors to score four runs and tie the game. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Fitzgerald started a rally with his third double of the night. After Stevens walked, Rothermich singled to left field. Fitzgerald was originally held by Manager Pete Romero at third base, but the Dans left fielder bobbled the ball. Seeing the bobble, Romero sent Fitzgerald who was able to score after the throw to the plate went awry giving the Sliders a one run edge going into the ninth. T R Dunne pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his fifth save, and preserve the win. The Sliders picked up fifteen hits on the night, with Fitzgerald and 3B Jake Ingold each contributing four, and have now picked up double digit hits in all three games during this winning streak. Springfield is off tomorrow but will be back at it on Tuesday when they host Hannibal at 6:35.
The Springfield Sliders are members of the Prospect League, playing at historic Robin Roberts Stadium. The Sliders are members of the Western Division along with the Danville (IL) Dans, DuBois County (IN) Bombers, Hannibal (MO) Cavemen, Quincy (IL) Gems, and Terre Haute (IN) Rex.
