Sliders Lose Wild One To Rex

July 16, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Springfield Sliders News Release

The Springfield Sliders split their series with the Terre Haute Rex at Bob Warn Field in Terre Haute, IN after losing tonight's contest 10-8. For the second straight night, it was the Rex scoring first, pushing a run across in the very first inning. They added another run in the second inning, before the pitching took over for the next few innings. The Rex would increase their lead to 6-0 with four more runs in the sixth, but then the Sliders' offense woke up in a big way. In the top of the seventh, the Sliders sent thirteen batters to the plate and scored seven runs to go in front. 3B Sean Gerber drove in the first run on an RBI single, scoring 1B Matt Tellor who was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Later in the inning, CF Ryan Aper hit a two run double, 2B Michael Hurwitz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score another, and then RF Wade Rothermich tripled to deep left to score three and give the Sliders the lead. Aper then hit a solo home run in the eighth to bring the Sliders' lead to 8-6. The bullpen could not hold the lead, however, and the Rex scored four in the bottom of the eighth to regain the lead. The Sliders got back to back singles with 2 outs in the ninth, and then a little controversy came up. Terre Haute Manager Brian Dorsett made consecutive mound visits to buy extra time for his bullpen to get ready, but since there was no pitch thrown in between the visits, Sliders' Manager Pete Romero came out to argue. The ensuing argument with the umpires got Romero ejected. Springfield then announced that they would play the rest of the game under protest because of the incident, so now things will move on to the Commissioner's Office for a review. The Commissioner will, in all likelihood, send out something regarding the incident tomorrow. The Sliders' three game road trip concludes tomorrow as they visit the Dubois County Bombers at 7:15 ET. The game will be broadcast on the Springfield Sliders' Ustream channel.

The Springfield Sliders are members of the Prospect League, playing at historic Robin Roberts Stadium. The Sliders are members of the Western Division along with the Danville (IL) Dans, DuBois County (IN) Bombers, Hannibal (MO) Cavemen, Quincy (IL) Gems, and Terre Haute (IN) Rex.
