Sliders Get 1st Win In Doubleheader Split

June 1, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Springfield Sliders News Release

The Sliders got the lead in both games of their doubleheader with the Danville Dans but could only earn a split at Danville Stadium. Game 1 of the doubleheader started as a continuation of last night's postponed game with Springfield already leading 2-0 in the top of the third. After a quiet start, the Sliders woke up and jumped out to a 5-0 lead after back to back doubles by Mike Fitzgerald and Matt Tellor drove in 3 runs. After a little back and forth, it was 6-2 heading into the ninth, but the Dans tied it up due to some shaky defense and seeing eye hits off the Dans' bats. Danville would win in the eleventh inning, 7-6, after a walk-off sacrifice fly by Wes Minton. In game 2, the Sliders again jumped out in front early thanks to a second inning home run from Sean Gerber. Gerber wasn't done as he later had an RBI double, an RBI triple, and then a single in the ninth to give him the cycle and to help the Sliders build an 8-2 lead. Shaky defense and some wild pitching helped Danville get back into the game but the Sliders were able to hang on late for their first win of the 2012 season, 8-6. Brandon Shaw picked up the win and David Frank pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save. The Sliders will now return to Robin Roberts Stadium, where tomorrow they begin a four game home stand as they take on the Hannibal Cavemen at 6:35.

The Springfield Sliders are members of the Prospect League, playing at historic Robin Roberts Stadium. The Sliders are members of the Western Division along with the Danville (IL) Dans, DuBois County (IN) Bombers, Hannibal (MO) Cavemen, Quincy (IL) Gems, and Terre Haute (IN) Rex.
