Springfield Sliders News Release

The Springfield Sliders completed a sweep of the Danville Dans with a 7-6 win at Danville Stadium in Danville, IL tonight. The Sliders grabbed the lead in the very first inning tonight as the combination of a two out single by 3B Sean Gerber and a Danville error, allowed 2B Michael Hurwitz to score the game's first run. After threatening in the first two innings but getting turned away by Sliders' starter Zach Wendorf, the Dans took the lead from the Sliders with three runs in the third inning. After giving up that run in the first inning, Danville's starter Andrew Alvarez started to get in a groove, including one stretch where he retired ten in a row. However, the Sliders would get to him in the sixth, starting with a solo home run by Gerber, his fifth of the year. CF Ryan Aper then hit an RBI triple to tie the game and SS Matt Highland drove him in with a single to give the Sliders the lead back at 4-3. However, the lead did not last for long as the Dans scored three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, regaining the lead at 6-4. In the seventh, the Sliders scored a run to cut the Dans' edge to one, as DH Wade Rothermich drove in a run with an RBI single. The game would stay 6-5 until the ninth. LF David Kerian started the inning by reaching on catcher's interference and RF Mike Fitzgerald reached on an infield single to put two on with nobody out, but the next two Sliders were retired. With two outs, Rothermich worked a walk to load the bases for Aper. Aper then hit a slow groundball to second that was bobbled, allowing everyone to reach safely, and Kerian to score the tying run. Then, with C Conner Dunn at the plate, Fitzgerald scored the winning run on a wild pitch. T R Dunne came on in the ninth inning to earn the save and preserve the win for his college teammate Ryan VanSaghi, who earned his first win with the Sliders. The Sliders have now won three straight and will look to make it four tomorrow when they start a two game series against the Hannibal Cavemen tomorrow at 6:35 at Robin Roberts Stadium. The game will be broadcast on the Springfield Sliders' Ustream channel.
