Alabama Slammers News Release
PELHAM, Ala. âAt a media conference held in Tuscaloosa today, team President Taylor Hall formally signed Tuscaloosa native Jim Black to a professional contract. The Slammers traded future considerations for Blacks rights after he was picked up by the Lakeland Loggerheads during a WHA2 free agent camp.
Black, a 6-1, 195 pound winger from Tuscaloosa, Alabama played junior hockey for the Pelham Prowlers of the SEHL during the 1999-2000 season where he recorded 14 points (10 goals, 4 assists) and 89 penalty minutes in 36 games. Jim went on to make his professional debut with the Louisiana IceGators of the ECHL during the 2001-02 season where he played 3 games.
"We're thrilled to have Jim on our team this season," said Slammers head coach Garry Unger. "Jim is an exciting young player that brings a lot of enthusiasm to our team. He got a taste of the professional game and knows the level of commitment it takes to play at this level. We will look to Jim to be a physical presence on the ice this season."
Black received a celebrity welcome at Wilhagans Sports Grill where Tuscaloosa Mayor Al DuPont was on hand to declare Thursday, September 25, 2003 Jim Black day in Tuscaloosa. The Tuscaloosa Hockey Booster Club, the T-Town Puckers also showed their support by hosting the reception and have purchased a large block of season tickets to attend the upcoming Slammers games..
"This is an exciting day for me," said Jim Black. "I'm really looking forward to playing for Coach Garry Unger and the Alabama Slammers this season. It looks like the team is going to have quite a following this year."
