Joliet Slammers News Release

Joliet, IL - The Joliet Slammers, presented by ATI Physical Therapy, are proud to announce the signing of infielder R.J. Fuhr and experienced slugger Nate Roberts to a contract for the 2015 season.

A young and energetic player out of California, Fuhr begins his professional career with the Slammers after playing collegiately for Mount Mercy University where he patrolled centerfield for the Mustangs. Slammers manager Jeff Isom views Fuhr as a future utility player for the Slammers.

Fuhr is the son of legendary hockey goaltender Grant Fuhr, the NHL Hall of Famer and 5 time Stanley Cup champion. Slammers manager Jeff Isom thinks the younger Fuhr will make an immediate impact at the top of the lineup. "RJ was signed out of the California Winter League where he was seen by many scouts. The reports coming back indicate he will be a terror on the base paths. We definitely expect him to be on a base a lot." said Isom.

Nate Roberts comes to the Slammers with a strong resume in his professional baseball career. Originally a 5th round draft pick by the Minnesota Twins, Roberts went on to tear up the Midwest league tallying a .443 on base percentage in 2011 and a .433 on base percentage in 2012. He later went on to win the batting title in the Arizona Fall League, a destination typically reserved as the finishing school for baseball's brightest young prospects. While in the Arizona Fall League, Roberts blistered the opposing pitchers hitting .446 in 19 games including a .565 on base percentage, finishing ahead of current major leaguers Kolten Wong, Didi Gregorius, and Joe Panik in the batting race. Roberts finished 2014 hitting .276 with a .391 on base percentage with the High A Fort Myers Miracle. Isom indicates he expects Roberts to hit near the top of the lineup, "The numbers don't lie, Nate has a history of hitting that indicates he should be a great 2 hitter setting the table for the power guys in our lineup."
