
Slammers Beat Gary SouthShore RailCats to Close out Preseason

Gary, IN - A big seventh inning propels the Joliet Slammers to a 5-2 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats. The Slammers finish the preseason with a 6-1 record.
The Slammers threatened to score in the top of the first inning before platting a run in the second against lefty Andy Roberts. With two outs, RF Phil Bates doubled to left field. A soft liner to right from 2B Max Casper drove in Bates, putting the Slammers up 1-0. Casper was later tagged out at home trying to score from second on a CF Charlie White single.
After cruising through the first three innings, Slammers starter Brett DeVall ran into some trouble in the forth. With one out, 1B J.D. Pulfer singled and later moved to second when SS Caleb Palensky walked. With two outs DH Michael Schroeder singled to right scoring Pulfer. Slammers RF Nate Roberts hosed down Palensky as he tried to advance to third to end the inning.
The RailCats took the lead in the fifth off relief pitcher Aaron Vaughn. Catcher Michael Vaughn reached with a walk to start the inning and RF Drew Martinez drove him in with a two-out double. The Slammers tied the game in the sixth off pitcher AJ Quintero when SS Alfredo Rodriquez scored on a wild pitch.
Joliet added on with three runs in the seventh inning. LF Nate Roberts singled and moved to third on a 1B Chris Serritella two-bagger. 3B Bryan Johns followed with a double of his own to drive in two. He came around to score on a C Dante Rosenberg single to give the Slammers a 5-2 lead.
The Slammers bullpen would take it from there, shutting out the RailCats the final four innings to preserve the lead. Vaughn pitched a scoreless sixth, while Andrew Strenge handled the seventh, John Maloney in the eighth and Tyler Murphy the ninth. Joliet is off on Wednesday before traveling to Florence, Kentucky to take on the Freedom on Thursday for the first game of the regular season.
