Slammers Announce Playoff Roster

PELHAM, Alabama - The Alabama Slammers today announced its 2003-04 WHA2 playoff roster. Per WHA2 playoff rules the roster lists 16 active players, and includes 1 emergency player (this player can only play if another player has been injured and cannot play) and 1 emergency goaltender (this goaltender can only play if both goaltenders have been injured and cannot play).

Goaltenders include: WHA2 All-Star goaltender Jamie Ronayne (24-12-3). Ronayne has started in 24 out of the last 26 games for the Slammers while finishing the regular season with the second most wins (24) and the second best save percentage (.913%) in the WHA2. He has a record of 5-4-2 against the Macon Trax this season. Slammers back up goaltender Jeff Kilgore (0-0-0), is also on the postseason list. Kilgore, a Birmingham native, has seen limited action since joining the Slammers in March.

Forwards include: Slammers leading scorer Ryan Prentice (31 goals, 46 assists, 77 points), Jeff Mead, Jeff Coulter, Mike Craigen, Chad Peck, Hugo Belanger, Bobby Quinnell, Justin Schabes, and newly acquired Rob Miller.

Defenseman include: WHA2's most valuble defenseman Jorin Welsh, Tom Wilson, Wade Patterson, Stephane Desjardins, and Dan Hopfner.

Emergency player: Former Birmingham Bull Mark Loeding.

Emergency goaltender: Glen Martin

Injured reserve players include: forwards Jason Renard (season ending IR - shoulder) and Jeff Cheeseman (season ending IR - ankle).

‚¬Å“I think we have a good roster, ‚¬Â said Slammers head coach, Garry Unger. ‚¬Å“I like our depth. We have strong goaltending, solid defense and lots of firepower up front at forward. The guys are really excited about the playoffs and we ‚¬â„¢re looking forward to getting started on Wednesday in Macon. It ‚¬â„¢s going to be intense hockey. ‚¬Â

Alabama will play its first game tomorrow evening (6:30 p.m. CST) in Macon, GA in the best-of-three first round. The Slammers will return home to Alabama for Game 2 of the series on Thursday at the Pelham Civic Complex. If necessary, game 3 will take place on Friday at the Pelham Civic Complex. Both Alabama home games start at 7:05 p.m.
