Slam host Gallup Tuesday in final game before All-Star break
January 23, 2007 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Bellingham Slam News Release
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Bellingham Slam, ranked ninth in the American Basketball Association, take on a top conference team as they welcome the Gallup Outlaws to Whatcom Pavilion at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Gallup is ranked 14th in the ABA's latest rankings with an 8-4 record.
The contest will be the Slam's final game before the team enjoys a week-long break for the 2007 ABA All-Star Game this weekend. One Slam player who won't be getting much rest is forward Mike Parker, who was voted by the Slam's fans to represent the team during the ABA's All-Star festivities in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Parker, who played collegiately at Evergreen State, has started all 19 games for the Slam this season. He is averaging a team-high 30.1 points per game on 52 percent shooting from the floor and is also pulling down 7.8 rebounds per game.
Parker will be no stranger to the ABA's All-Star Game festivities. He was selected by the league last season to participate in the All-Star dunk contest, but was eliminated in the first round of competition. While this weekend will be Parker's first action in the All-Star Game itself, he will have large Slam shoes to fill. Last season, the Slam's Caleb Gervin nearly single-handedly won the game for the ABA's West squad when the game was held in Miami. Gervin brought his team back from a 20-point second half deficit and missed what would have been a game-winning shot at the buzzer.
The Slam's game Tuesday night against Gallup is the fourth game of a season-long six game homestand. The Slam resume play next Tuesday, Jan. 30 against the Big Valley Shockwave at 7 p.m.
