Minot Skyrockets News Release
Tijuana, Mexico. The Ron Boone division-leading San Jose Skyrockets (22-5) completed their road trip to Tijuana with a victory over the Dragons (7-18), 103-97. However, it was no easy win for the Skyrockets. San Jose had their hands full as the Dragons started off quickly with Matt Vaughan scoring 2 three-pointers and Worley scoring a 3-pointer for Tijuana, giving the Dragons a 37-15 advantage at the end of the first quarter. During the second quarter, the Skyrockets implemented a full-court press that forced 11 Tijuana turnovers. Successful stops on the defensive end also helped spark San Jose's offense with Jason Smith scoring 11, Jamar Howard with 8 and Anthony Lumpkin with 5 in the 2nd quarter. As a result, the Skyrockets came within 4 points at halftime, down 56-52.
The Skyrockets maintained their focus in the second half as Todd Okeson's layup in the first 30 seconds brought San Jose within one point of Tijuana. San Jose's full court press continued to pose problems for Tijuana as the Dragons turned the ball over 9 times in the second half. With 10 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, San Jose finally took the lead and continued on to secure the victory.
Smith led San Jose with 21, Lamar Castile with 19 and Howard had 18. Vaughan led Tijuana with 27 while Zuniga and Shipley contributed 20 and 19 respectively. The #5 ranked Skyrockets will next travel to Gallup to face the #4 Talons on Feb 21, 22 in very big games. Afterwards, the Skyrockets will return home to play against the Orange County Buzz on Feb 25, 26.
