Skyrockets' Magic Number is 22

February 21, 2008 - Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1)
Minot Skyrockets News Release

Minot, ND - With eight regular season games left and a 34.5 quarter point lead over Pittsburgh, the Skyrockets need to win only 22 more quarter points to clinch the regular season American Conference Championship. This means that once Minot wins 22 quarters, or Pittsburgh loses 22 quarters, there is no possible way the Xplosion could catch the Skyrockets in the standings. Also any combination of quarters won by Minot and quarters lost by Pittsburgh that totals 22 would put Minot out of reach for the Xplosion.

The Skyrockets have eight games left in the regular season:

February 26 vs. Butte Daredevils February 28 at Albany Patroons February 29 at Albany Patroons March 1 at Albany Patroons March 4 at Atlanta Krunk March 6 vs. East Kentucky Miners March 7 vs. Great Falls Explorers March 8 vs. Great Falls Explorers

The Pittsburgh Xplosion also have eight remaining games, the next game being held on February 23rd against the East Kentucky Miners.

The CBA has always operated on a quarter point system. This system allots a point for each quarter won and 3 points for a win, a total of 7 points per game. Each team has a total of 336 points available during the season, 7 points for each of the 48 games. Minot currently has 191 points won, and Pittsburgh has won 156.5 points. This gives Minot a 34.5-point lead.

Since Pittsburgh has a total of 56 possible points left (8 games x 7 points), Minot needs to win 22 points to put them out of reach. At this point, 21.5 points would guarantee Minot a tie with Pittsburgh, but 22 would clinch the regular season American Conference Championship. This assumes that Pittsburgh wins every quarter point left, so any quarter lost by Pittsburgh also diminishes the Magic Number.

"Every game is important at this point in the season, and every quarter is important. At the same time, you don't want to risk injury going into the post-season," said Head Coach Chris Daleo. "We have had a successful couple of years, winning over 30 games in back-to-back years, which is the benchmark of a good year in the 48-game season. The team is excited for the play-offs and look forward to bringing the Championship to Minot."

Join the Skyrockets at the Launchpad on Tuesday, February 26th as they take one step towards clinching the American Conference title. Tip-off against the Butte Daredevils is at 7:05 pm. For more information or to reserve tickets, call the Skyrockets office at 839-SLAM.
