Sussex Skyhawks News Release
AUGUSTA, N.J. - Early rains were not enough to keep away an energetic crowd from watching the Sussex Skyhawks defeat the American Defenders of New Hampshire by a score of 9-0 Wednesday night at Skylands Park. Skyhawks starter, Kyle Ruwe (3-0) pitched a complete game shutout as he gave up nine hits and struck out eight.
The Skyhawks started the scoring in the first inning by scoring two runs following a two-out error by American Defender third basemen Chris Kelly. Skyhawks' Jorge Moreno scored the first run and Maikel Jova scored the second on an infield hit by Jeremy Hunt.
In the fourth inning the Skyhawks added four more runs off of four consecutive base hits and two more New Hampshire errors. Mark Pappas had two RBI's on his base hit, advanced to second on the throw home, and moved to third when American Defender catcher Zane Chavez's throw sailed over second base and into centerfield. He later scored on another error by New Hampshire's Chris Kelly. Ray Serrano (3 for 5) added 2 RBI's with a single in the sixth inning after a wild pitch scored Jova from third.
New Hampshire starter Nick Asselin (1-2), who only gave up two earned runs, got the loss.
New Hampshire travels to start a three game series with the New Jersey Jackals. The Skyhawks return to action on Friday night against the Brockton Rox in the first of a three game series. Game starts at a special time 6:35 p.m. with fireworks following the game.
