Six-Run Inning Propels CT Tigers in 9-5 Win at Hudson Valley

Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - The Connecticut Tigers (16-16) used a two-out rally in the top of the third inning to score six runs on seven hits and take the lead for good in their first win over the Hudson Valley Renegades (19-12) this season, 9-5 on Wednesday night at Duchess Stadium.

With a 2-1 lead in the third, Tigers left fielder Eric De La Rosa drew a controversial walk following a borderline pitch in a two-strike count that was not awarded to Hudson Valley starter Easton McGee (Loss, 3-2). The next seven Tigers reached base with five different run-scoring base hits including an RBI triple to left-center field by second baseman Jeremiah Burks for his first hit with Connecticut and a two-run double by right fielder Dayton Dugas. Connecticut capped off the rally with an RBI single from catcher Moises Nunez against Renegades reliever Alan Strong to make it an 8-1 lead. The Tigers sent 11 batters to the plate in the third inning and eight different hitters reached base.

The Renegades chipped away at the Tigers lead over the next three innings. Connecticut starter Carlos Guzman did not qualify for the win after pitching 3 2/3 innings with a solo home run given up to Hudson Valley catcher Chris Betts in the fourth. During the fifth inning, Tigers reliever Jack O'Loughlin gave up an RBI single and was charged with two more runs after Drew Crosby allowed a two-run double to Renegades third baseman Adrian Rondon, who cut the Connecticut lead to 8-5.

Crosby (Win, 4-0) bounced back with two hits allowed in 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and Tigers closer Yaya Chentouf (Save, 5) remained perfect in save opportunities during his first professional season by recording a six-out save. Crosby and Chentouf combined to retire the final 11 Renegades in a row.

The Tigers finished with a season-best 16 base hits and De La Rosa led Connecticut with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate including two doubles, a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. The 21-year-old, seventh-round draft pick has now reached base safely in his first 11 games with the Tigers.

Burks went 2-for-4 with a triple and a homer while Wenceel Perez, Ryan Karstetter, Nunez, and Dugas all tallied two base hits apiece on Wednesday. The Tigers improved their record to 1-4 at Hudson Valley this season and jumped to a third-place tie with Vermont in the Stedler Division, two games behind the co-leaders from Lowell and Tri-City.

On Thursday, Connecticut plays the rubber match of a three-game series in their final regular season game at Duchess Stadium this year. Tigers right-handed pitcher Carson Lance (1-1, 3.00) draws the start against Hudson Valley righty Michael Mercado (1-0, 4.13) with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. Tune in to the Norwich Courtyard by Marriott Connecticut Tigers Radio Network with Kevin Gehl and Elijah Gonzalez on WICH 1310 AM across Connecticut and online at CTTigers.com via TuneIn Radio for game coverage beginning Thursday at 6:50 p.m.
