New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

The New Orleans Zephyrs scored six times in the eighth inning to pull away from the Sacramento River Cats, earning a series split with a 12-2 win on Tuesday afternoon.

With the bases loaded and holding a 6-2 lead, Z's second baseman Danny Richar battled Sacramento reliever Brad Kilby for 13 pitches, including nine consecutive foul balls. Richar ended the at-bat by lifting a two-run double just inside the foul line in left field, prompting a pitching change.

The Zephyrs greeted Kyle Middleton with an RBI single by Mike Lamb, and a two-run homer by Hector Luna, his team-leading sixth of the year, to cap the six-run outburst.

Luna finished with three hits and three RBI, while Richar posted his second straight three-hit effort.

The game began in sloppy fashion, with the Zephyrs committing errors in each of the first two innings, and Sacramento committing two errors of their own and allowing a pair of runs to score on wild pitches in the fifth.

New Orleans led 4-2 in the sixth when Neil Wilson hit a two-run homer to left, his first of the year, chasing Sacramento starter Clay Mortensen from the game. Mortensen (4-2) was charged with six runs - five earned - and seven hits with three wild pitches in 5 1/3 innings.

The benefactor of the Zephyrs' bats awakening was Brian Lawrence, who turned in a fourth consecutive quality start by going six innings. Lawrence (3-3) scattered eight hits while yielding one earned run.

Taylor Tankersley, Jose Veras and Kasey Olenberger combined to hold Sacramento to just one hit without a run over the final three frames.

The Zephyrs have Wednesday off before heading west to open an eight-game road trip in Tacoma on Thursday night. First pitch is scheduled for 9:00, with Jorge Sosa (3-1, 3.76) facing David Pauley (0-3, 3.27).
