Sioux Falls takes opener at Phil Welch

ST. JOSEPH, MO-Sioux Falls (9-7, 25-39) won a back-and-forth series opener 7-4 in St. Joe (6-11, 32-33). The Canaries jumped to the lead with two runs in the first and came back to score the last four runs of the game after the Blacksnakes took a 4-3 lead in the fifth for the win.

The loss extends St. Joe's losing streak to six consecutive games.

Trailing 3-0 after three innings, St. Joe got one in the fourth on Wil Quintana's single and scored three in the fifth for a 4-3 lead. Denver Kitch tripled in two runs and scored on Jimmy Mojica's sacrifice fly for the lead. But Sioux Falls scored two in the sixth to retake the lead, with St. Joe's inability to turn a double play helping the go-ahead rally.

Sioux Falls added two in the ninth.

Jesen Merle (3-3) had an up-and-down 5 2/3 innings and took the loss. Ben Thomas and Wil Quintana extended hitting streaks to 11 and 9 games in a row, respectively.

St. Joe will continue their search for answers Monday night against the Canaries at 7:05pm. J.C. Huguet (3-2) makes his first start of the year against Sioux Falls' Sean Donlin (0-4). Gates open at 6pm and the broadcast opens at 6:45pm with the Heartland Health Pre-Game Show at www.stjoeblacksnakes.com and at the ballpark on 88.9 FM.
