Chico Outlaws News Release

The record books will remember Tuesday's contest as the shortest nine-inning game in Chico Outlaws history, but for starting pitcher Nick Singleton, the contest was memorable for a much more personal reason.

The 23-year-old righthander struck out seven Fullerton hitters en route to the first complete game of his professional career and the Outlaws rode Singleton's arm to a 2-1 victory over the Fullerton Flyers in front of 1,437 at Nettleton Stadium. The game took just two hours and 11 minutes to complete.

Mike Mallory provided all the offense the home team would need when he belted a two-run home run over the left-centerfield fence in the sixth inning. In all, the Outlaws collected six hits.

Singleton rarely encountered trouble, but when he did, his slider got him out of any potential bad innings. One of those innings was the fourth, when Gabriel Mayorga lead off with a single and Rich Pohle moved him to third with a single of his own. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Singleton got Peanut Williams to hit into a double play, which scored Mayorga. Williams had entered the game on a 13-game hitting streak, but that was snapped. The run would be Fullerton's only one of the game, and Williams was not credited with an RBI.

Fullerton fought to get back into the game with a leadoff double from Pohle in the seventh inning, but Singleton's slider ended any hopes of a game-tying rally for the visitors.

With his home run and two runs batted in, Mallory bolstered his league-leading stats in both those departments. He now has eight home runs for the season as well as 32 RBIs.

With Tuesday's win - Chico's fourth straight and seventh in the last nine games - the Outlaws improved to 14-12 on the season and moved to within 3½ games of front-running Reno in the Golden Baseball League standings. The Flyers dropped their fourth in a row to fall to 11-14 on the year.

Brian Kroll (1-2) is scheduled to start Wednesday night's contest against the Flyers. Fullerton will counter with former Outlaws pitcher Jeremy Sugarman (1-2). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
