San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
SAN DIEGO - A big fourth and sixth inning were the difference in a hot summer night at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Starting pitcher Chris Gale (0-3) was roughed up in the sixth, and headed to the showers early responsible for six runs on six hits and three walks. The bullpen was effective for the second night in a row, but Yuma's brilliant four closed out the game.
The Surf Dawgs would finally get on the scoreboard first. Victor Roldan led off the bottom of the third inning with a single and Johnny Day followed that up with a double. With two on and one out, Adam Mandel hit a single that would clear the bases and give San Diego a 2-0 lead over Yuma.
Unfortunately for San Diego Yuma would answer right back in the fourth and take the lead. After Jason Dewey reached on a fielders choice, Juan Lebron singled and advanced to second on a Jacob Guzman chopper to put runners at second and third with two out. Hector Tena walked and then Billy Kovatch hit a double that cleared the bases. After three and a half, the Scorpions led 3-2.
San Diego would come back to tie it in the fifth. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, designated hitter Adam Mandel walked and scored on a Seth Pietsch double to right field to tie the game at three.
The lead wouldn't last long because Yuma put up a three-spot in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead. Gale faced four batters in the inning, all of whom reached. Lebron had an RBI double for the first run of the inning, and Kovatch, who went 4-for-4 with 5 RBI, hit a two-run double to seal the game.
The Surf Dawgs would not threaten Yuma again until the ninth when the first two reached. But the game would end on a double play by Matthew Connolly.
The Surf Dawgs (9-16) hit the road for the third time this season, and face off against these same Yuma Scorpions (10-15) tomorrow night at 7:15 PT. The Surf Dawgs do not come home again until July 7th.
