In unrelated news, the Amarillo Dillas announced today they have signed veteran catcher Matt Ceriani to the roster to fill the vacancy left behind by former mainstay Justin Wenger. A native of Vallejo, California, the 6'2 200- pound catcher originally signed out of the University of Mississippi as an undrafted free agent by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1998. Ceriani spent four seasons playing in the Brewers minor league system splitting time between Helena, Mudville, Huntsville, Beloit, and High Desert of the Pioneer League, California League, Southern League, and Midwest League respectively.
The 11-year veteran spent last year playing in the Golden Baseball League for the Edmonton Capitals, where he recorded some of his best career offensive numbers appearing in 62 games with a .312 batting average to go along with 12 doubles and 4 homeruns while driving in 37 runs, in 202 official at-bats.
Ceriani brings a new dimension behind plate to the defending United League Champions, as they haven't had a catcher of his experience in several years which will be a great fit for a young pitching staff, according to manager Brady Bogart. "As a manager you hate to lose such a great competitor like Justin (Wenger) but we appreciate and understand his decision", Bogart said. "We have a very young pitching staff this year and having a guy like Matt (Ceriani) back there to work day in and day out with them is going to be outstanding not only for them, but for our coaching staff, there's something to be said for veteran experience".
Time will tell exactly how this new found experience of leadership pays off and that will start to unfold very soon when the Dillas report for training camp on Thursday, May 20 and the first official workouts begin the morning of Friday, May 21.
ULB Opening Day 2010 is Thursday, May 27 when the Dillas travel to San Angelo for a two-game series against the Colts. The reigning United League Champions will open their home schedule Saturday, May 29, when the Colts follow the Dillas back to Amarillo to play a four-game series. Season tickets are still available and single-game tickets officially go on-sale Monday, May 10th.
