Ohio Valley Greyhounds News Release
Boise, Idaho (April 9, 2002)â Upon receiving his 2002 Playoff Most Valuable Player award at the conclusion of the CBA Championship Game on April 6, Dakota Wizards guard Miles Simon became the first person ever to earn three annual awards in the CBA and Eastern Basketball Association's (EBA) 56 year history, having already been named the 2002 Regular Season MVP and Newcomer of the Year. The EBA became the CBA in 1978.
The 6-4 University of Arizona ('98) standout ranked second in scoring average (23 ppg), and led the league in 3-point field goal percentage (63-136, .463) and free throw percentage (190-207, .918) during the regular season. He also ranked 7th in assists per game (5.1) and 8th in field goal percentage (310-602, .515). On Feb. 5, 2002 Simon set a CBA record with his 60th consecutive free throw. The streak, previously set in 1984 by Robert Smith of the Toronto Tornados with 56, began on January 21, 2002.
During the Playoffs Simon led the Wizards to a three game sweep (5 game series) of the Fargo-Moorhead Beez in the National Conference playoffs and a 116-109 win over the Rockford Lightning in the single game championship. He averaged a team high 19.5 points and 6.5 assists.
The 26-year-old guard, who was also the All-League First Team and All-Star Team's top-vote getter, scored 30 points in the 1997 NCAA Championship game versus Kentucky on his way to Final Four MVP honors. During his senior season he was named a First-Team All-American and was subsequently selected by the Orlando Magic with the 42nd pick of the 1998 NBA draft. Simon played five games with the Magic in 1998-99 and spent the last several seasons in Europe, averaging 23.3 points per game in the Italian league last season. In his first CBA season he tied Rockford's Jeff Sanders for the most Player of the Week Awards (4) over the course of the 2001-02 campaign.
Nine players have earned two annual CBA awards: Andre McCarter (1979 MVP and NOY), Steve Hayes (1980 Finals MVP and '85 MVP), Lee Johnson (1981 ROY and Finals MVP), Vincent Askew (1990 and '91 MVP), Barry Mitchell (1992 MVP and Defensive POY), Derek Strong (1993 MVP and NOY), Stephen Bardo (1993 and '94 Defensive POY), Jeff McInnis (1998 ROY and 2000 MVP) and Adrian Griffin (1999 MVP and Finals MVP).
