March 6, 2023 - XFL (XFL)
Houston Roughnecks News Release
The Houston Roughnecks continued their stellar play on Sunday night, defeating the San Antonio Brahmas by a score of 22-13 at TDECU Stadium.
Houston (3-0) has cemented their place at the top of the XFL South Division, while San Antonio (1-2) dropped down to third place in the division.
The Brahmas struck first with an opening drive touchdown, set up by a 59-yard return on the opening kickoff. After going down 7-0, Roughnecks' QB Brandon Silvers led the offense down the field for a scoring drive of their own, capped off by a 7-yard touchdown by WR Jontre Kirklin. A successful 2-point try from Silvers to Kirklin gave the Roughnecks their first lead of the game at 8-7. Houston's defense would hold the San Antonio offense to two punts for the remainder of the quarter.
The second quarter was controlled entirely by the Roughnecks, as the offense came up with big plays and the defense remained stout. After completions of 27 and 25 yards, Silvers would hook up with Kirklin yet again for a 3-yard touchdown to increase their lead to 14-7. Silvers tossed his third touchdown to cap off the first half, as he connected with WR Deontay Burnett on an 18-yard pass. A successful three-point try by QB Cole MDonald bumped the score up to 22-7 going into halftime.
After a Silvers interception midway through the third quarter by Brahmas' DB Kameron Kelly, San Antonio would strike back with a 2-yard touchdown rush of their own, making the score 22-13. While the Houston defense held San Antonio scoreless in the second quarter, the Brahmas returned that same favor in the third.
An early fourth quarter interception by Roughnecks' DB Ajene Harris gave him his third of the season in as many games. On San Antonio's next drive, they were held to no gain three consecutive times at the one-yard line by Houston's defensive front. On fourth down, a combined tackling effort by A. Harris and DB Jordan Mosley stuffed the Brahmas for a four-yard loss and a pivotal turnover on downs. The game would later end in true Roughnecks' fashion, as LB John Daka and LB Chauncey Rivers combined for a sack as the clock ran out, giving Houston the victory over San Antonio.
After a three-game homestand to start the season, the Roughnecks will now embark on a three-game road trip. They'll face off against the Orlando Guardians on Sunday, March 11 at Camping World Stadium. Game 4 will air on FX at 6 p.m. CT.
