The Atlanta Silverbacks Men took the lead in the 2007 Southern Derby Cup tonight with a 1-0 win against the Charleston Battery. The Silverbacks pulled out the win with a goal in the 90th minute by newcomer Scott Buete. "We battled hard defensively and a few heroics in the back kept Charleston from scoring. We made the most of our chance late in the game and finished the ball," commented Head Coach Jason Smith. The game seemed certain to be a tie until the Silverbacks began a counterattack in the 90th minute, as Atlanta advanced down the field Jason McLaughlin switched the ball across the field to Buete, Buete cranked a shot that beat the Battery's keeper and went inside the far post. Tonight's match was the first leg of the seventh-annual Southern Derby Cup. The Cup will conclude after next week's rematch between Atlanta and Charleston, on Friday, June 30 at 7:30 pm. The winner will be determined on aggregate points from the two games; the Silverbacks win tonight gives them a three point lead. The Silverbacks improved their record to 3-4-3, leaving them just three points shy of the Battery. Next week the Silverbacks will have the chance to not only defend their home undefeated streak, but also edge past Charleston in the First Division table. Tickets to see the Silverbacks in the Southern Derby Championship next Friday are available, however, after midnight Thursday night remaining tickets will only be available through the online "print-at-home" option.
